Summer annual weeds can be an eyesore for all turfgrass sites. Weeds, in general, like to invade sites where turfgrass is weakened and where the overall density of the turf has been reduced. Therefore, maintaining a healthy, dense turf is the best approach for weed management.

In two days it will be Super Bowl Sunday. Considering the fact that the New Orleans Saints are playing in their first championship game we predict the level of excitement in East Texas is going to rise. No doubt there will be all manner of parties and entertainment planned. Yearly we note that plenty of churches also use the big game to get people together. It will be a fun time.

How do you tell when spring has arrived? Someone asked me that last week and I would like to hear your thoughts. I watch the calendar for Easter, which is April 4 this year. We can watch for the first robins but birds can also get mixed up. Trees budding is another indication, so just take your pick and expect it to be different every year.

Perhaps you are worried and confused about what is going on in Pakistan and Afghanistan. I am, too. It is, after all, a culture so different from our own that, admittedly, I have difficulty comprehending it, but at least I am trying. Unfortunately it seems as if a growing number of people have given up the attempt.

We're certainly glad to see that President Barack Obama is not letting threats from China stop his meeting with the Dalai Lama. Chinese officials said Tuesday that Obama's meeting with the Tibetan spiritual leader would set back U.S.-China ties. So be it. China has no right to tell the United States president whom he can or cannot meet with. To even make the suggestion is fairly outrageous.

It has been our experience to note that the city of Marshall staff budgets in a conservative manner. That is, the city staff is careful to generally underestimate the amount of money coming in and plan expenses accordingly. This is why, in most years, there is a bit of money that is left over. That is a good thing.

Our experience is that those who will be cruel to animals will not hesitate to be cruel to human beings and the reverse is of course true, too. This kind of behavior generally does not indicate some form of mental illness, but rather it is generally the sign of a sociopath, someone who simply has no regard for anyone but themselves.

The State of the Union report has not always been a speech. For years in those earlier times, the president would merely send a letter to Congress which, we assume, would read it and file it away. It is not likely that many members of the public ever knew or cared what it said.
